Fire Pit Permits & Inspections

All outdoor fires in the City of Thompson, including those in backyard fire pits, are regulated by the Open-Air Burning By-Law, which is designed to protect public safety and minimize fire risk within municipal boundaries.

Fire Pit Permit Requirements

Any person who intends to install or use a fire pit on their property must apply for and obtain a fire pit permit from Thompson Fire & Emergency Services before the fire pit is used.

A fire pit is defined as any non-combustible structure or container used for recreational fire purposes and constructed in accordance with the by-law.

The permit application must include a site plan showing where the fire pit will be located on the property.

Inspection Requirement

Prior to the first use of a fire pit, it must be inspected and approved by the Fire Chief or their designate. Only once it passes inspection will a fire pit permit be issued.

This inspection requirement is explicitly set out in the by-law and is mandatory for initial permit issuance.

Annual Renewal & Re-Inspection

Fire pit permits are valid for one calendar year from initial date of issue.

To renew a fire pit permit, the existing fire pit must be re-inspected by Thompson Fire & Emergency Services each year.

If the fire pit has been moved or damaged, the existing permit becomes null and void, and a new inspection must be conducted before it can be re-approved or renewed.

Fees

The permit fee for a new fire pit is $80, as specified in the City of Thompson Fee and Fine Schedule. The cost to renew a permit for an existing fire pit is $40.

Penalties

Using a fire pit without a valid permit and inspection approval may result in fines of $350 for a first offence and $700 for second and subsequent offences, as outlined in the Fee and Fine Schedule.
