Coming to Thompson

I’ve lived in Thompson my entire life. My family moved here when I was too young to remember! I went to elementary and high school here, leaving for a short period to go to university. In total, I’ve lived here for about 45 years. Every time I left I chose to comeback, and that’s important.

My life in Thompson

I work as the Public Health Manager for the Northern Regional Health Authority, which is just one of the many jobs I have had here. When you hear about the opportunities in Thompson, it’s not something people say just to get you here, the opportunities are real, I have experienced it in my own professional life.

I have been involved in planning and funding for the development of the Millennium Trail, and part of the redevelopment of Cliff Park. There is no better place for active living than Thompson. You can go downhill skiing, gold, kayaking, boating, and so much more within 15 minutes of your home, all with the amenities of a big city.

The best thing about Thompson

I believe our community spirit as Thompsonites is one of the things we need to be most proud of. When we hosted the Manitoba Games we showcased that spirit. I have been involved in countless events and that experience was definitely the most powerful.

I’m also proud to live in a city that supports art and culture. I play in a community band and I play hockey a few times a week. I can’t imagine retiring anywhere else – we have a little bit of everything right at our fingertips.

Where to go

The multi-use path is one of my favourite things to do in Thompson. It’s active living, people use it for many purposes, to get them from place to place, or just to spend time with family and exercise.

Vision for Thompson

We need to embrace all of the things we have to offer our communities and Northern neighbours as a service center and hub. We are embracing being an Indigenous community and need to continue doing so. Now we need to encourage the entrepreneurial spirit and take off as even more of a service center.

Thompson has changed so much over the last decade, and we are growing in many ways. There are so many pieces that make us whole, it’s not just about relying one thing, so I see a great future for Thompsonites.
