In 2010, Vale Manitoba Operations announced that it would be closing its smelter and refinery at its Thompson operation and transitioning exclusively to mining and milling. After extending the life of the facilities for nearly a decade, it was confirmed that the facilities would close in July 2018. In October 2017, Vale also suspended operations at the Birchtree Mine, placing the facility under care and maintenance for the foreseeable future.

Thompson 2020 was created to help the community through this transition by helping affected employees find 
new pathways to employment, exploring new ways to expand lifestyle opportunities in Thompson, and promoting the economic opportunities that continue to exist in Thompson, both as an industrial hub and a regional service center.
