The Thompson Zoo was incorporated in 1978 starting off with just a few animals. Today we have over 100 animals and birds. The Thompson Zoo is the only northern Wildlife Rehab Centre in Manitoba. This small zoo houses native northern species, domestic farm animals and a wide variety of birds and waterfowl. It provides an educational and recreational experience for children and adults of the city of Thompson and the Norman Region as well as many out of province tourists who visit the city. It is well utilized by a complete cross section of the multi-racial population of the city and is one of the few recreational facilities that a family can visit and enjoy at no cost.
The Thompson Zoo is operated by the Thompson Zoological Society, a non-profit organization registered as a charitable organization. The society was set up with the purpose of operating and maintaining the Thompson Zoo.
While the City of Thompson has been the major source of funding, the Board of The Thompson Zoo is constantly faced with the challenge of finding other sources of funding for capital projects. To this end a Sponsor an Animal program exists and other donations are gratefully accepted. All such funds are deposited into a trust fund created for that purpose. In addition, volunteers are always welcome.
