The Thompson Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation is pleased with the progress of the Downtown Ambassador program over the last 3 years. With each year the program operates, it becomes more refined and more effective in its ability to address community safety, specifically to our downtown area.
The Downtown Ambassador Program primary role is to:
- Assist the public with directions and inquiries about Thompson, it’s businesses and its services
- Respond to calls concerning specific incidents and refer to appropriate agencies, (suspicious persons, tourists with special needs, first aid situations and similar events)
- Provide an effective street presence, monitoring and deterring criminal activities in parking facilities and other areas accessible to the public
- Report crime and “quality of life” concerns to appropriate agencies and assist in mitigating these from taking root
The program is designed to have the Ambassadors out in the community during the peak times when the demand for assistance is at its height. They always work in pairs and never alone. However, due to safety reasons, the Ambassadors’ do not work late at night, except for when they are assisting with events.
The majority of the time is spent on foot, covering the downtown core area. However, bicycles are used to ensure that the millennium trail is also covered at a minimum of once a week.
