LafreniereCouncillor Charlene Lafreniere

Charlene Lafreniere was born and raised in Thompson. She is a proud northern Aboriginal woman and Thompsonite. Charlene values her time with family and friends. She enjoys spending time on the land by enjoying a walk through the forest, canoeing, camping or attending traditional ceremonies. After attending and graduating high school at RDPC, she continued her education and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree specializing in Justice and Law Enforcement, and Political Science from the University of Winnipeg. Charlene has been the Director of Institutional Advancement at the University College of the North (UCN) since September 2010, previously she was the Executive Director of the Thompson Neighborhood Renewal Corporation and Director of Justice at Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak.

As a City Councillor, her leadership and determination have been part of the driving forces behind several initiatives in the areas of Planning, Recreation, Culture, Education, Housing, Safety, Economic Development and the Thompson Aboriginal Accord. Charlene has been a volunteer since her younger years beginning as a teenager coaching ringette to serving governing boards. She continues to serve on a number of working groups, committees and community boards, as well as support and attend countless community events. Most recently Charlene became the National Co-Chair of the National Urban Aboriginal Strategy Caucus. Charlene’s accomplishments are the result of her hard work and dedication.
